**"Sunita Williams: 254 Days in Space and the Historic Journey Back to Earth"**
Sunita Williams, an Indian-origin NASA astronaut, has completed her journey back to Earth after her mission in space. Her return took place on March 19 at 3:27 AM via SpaceX's spacecraft, Dragon. The spacecraft safely landed in the waters off the Florida coast. NASA broadcasted the entire journey live, which was watched by people around the world.
Sunita Williams and her fellow astronauts departed from the International Space Station (ISS) on March 18 at around 8:30 AM. Their journey lasted approximately 17 hours. Originally, Sunita Williams was scheduled to spend 8-10 days in space, but due to a malfunction in the spacecraft, she had to stay in space for 254 days. With this, she became the first woman to spend the longest continuous time in space.
Challenges of the International Space Station (ISS)
The space station is located about 403 kilometers above Earth and orbits the planet at a speed of 28,163 kilometers per hour. As a result, there are 16 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours. A day here lasts only 90 minutes. Living on the space station is extremely challenging because resources are limited. Food is packed and heated before eating. Water is obtained through recycling, which includes purifying urine and sweat. Oxygen is generated by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using oxygen generators.
The Return Process
The return process of the Dragon spacecraft is completed in 6 steps:
1. Preparation Astronauts secure all their equipment and data and board the spacecraft.
2. Separation The spacecraft detaches from the ISS and fires its engines to head toward Earth.
3. Atmospheric Entry The spacecraft enters Earth's atmosphere, where friction generates intense heat.
4. Heat Shield The spacecraft's heat shield protects it from the extreme heat.
5. Parachute For a safe landing, the parachute must deploy at the right time to slow down the spacecraft.
6. Landing The spacecraft lands safely on Earth, usually in the ocean or a desert.
Sunita Williams' Message
Sunita Williams celebrated Diwali from the space station and sent a message to the world that the festival of Diwali keeps hopes alive. Her journey is not only significant from a scientific perspective but also stands as a testament to human determination and courage.
Sunita Williams' return is a historic event for the entire world and highlights India's growing role in the field of space exploration. Her achievement is a matter of pride not only for India but for all of humanity.
